Watched My Blueberry Nights tonight. It was very ..comfortable, like floating in a pool or sinking into a worn-in chair. I didn’t find it to be quite as poignant or thought-provoking as his other films (mostly due to Nora Jones’ flatness as an actress and possibly even a character), but it was enjoyable and I would watch it again the way I would watch Lost in Translation or any other ‘soundtrack movie’ (a movie that lulls you in its atmosphere and whose characters are less memorable than the overall feel of their exchanges).

Aside from Norah’s blank looks, I was pretty distracted by how self-consciously American Wong Kar Wai made the story/setting. Every other character has a vague southern accent and the story takes place in New York, Memphis, and Vegas. There’s something a little artificial about covering the bases like that.

It’s possible I’m being unfairly picky, though.

I think a part of me feels a little let down by the loss of mystery in watching a Kar Wai film in English. As much as I wanted to see America through his lens, watching Blueberry Nights made me realize that part of my love for him stems from the fact that the language and culture he uses in his usual palette are totally inaccessible to me, freeing me from criticism toward his vision.

I haven’t listened to it since high school, but today I realized I miss LoveLine. I was utterly confused about sex until Adam Carolla came into my life in 1998. He made adolescence bearable, even if he did corrupt my mind with discussions of sex practices I may have been a little young to know about. He may also be the reason I treat physicality with more humor than some.

Today I tried to find a Best Of album from the Dr. Drew/Carolla years, and though such a thing does not exist, a number of hilarious clips can be found here and throughout YouTube. LL also has an extremely detailed Wikipedia page, in case you’re interested.

They have a website (and podcast) too, but considering it’s Dr. Drew and this guy

(dsw) Saw these lovely trapeze artist pumps while shoe browsing through DSW earlier this week. They’re surprisingly comfortable and only 55$. I can’t buy them because of my current ..limited budget, but a birthday request has been made to the parents.

Just look at them! I’m generally against bows and other such girlish adornments, but there’s a playfulness to them I simply can’t resist.

The same afternoon I spotted these ugly ugly wrinkled white latex pumas They are $80 and look like those platform shoes people wear when one of their legs is shorter than the other.

Then there were these lovely little purple marc jacobs
They’re much subtler than most of his other recent releases and if I had the money and the ability to walk in heels higher than 2 inches, then surely they’d be mine.

I can’t stop smiling when I look at this photo my mom recently posted on her blog. Having a classy, beautiful, and smart Russian lady for a mom has always been a secret pride of mine and makes me feel ok about getting older (so many years from now).

And then I call her and she tells me that she and my step-dad are going to learn to play some of the songs from Once, and it makes my day.
