So, it’s official: the left fan on my MacBook is broken. The genius bar guy said it was the worst noise he’s ever heard. I’m without a computer for the next 5 days or so, but at least I’m covered and  it’s free (my parents were kind enough to get me extended coverage, because my last Mac died pretty much exactly 3 years in ..and then again a year later, costing us a...

AV Club: Gateways to Geekery →
A really great section in this week’s AV Club. For one, they promote Peep Show, but, more importantly, they have an introduction to A French New Wave—a genre that I’ve been wanting to get into for some time now but didn’t know how.

Went to an opium party yesterday.. Or rather a lecture by a the Opium Magazine founder Todd Zuniga. It was about reading, but, ultimately, it made me excited to write again. I’ve been wanting to submit something for publishing for years now and this might just be the publication for me. —- Funny enough, I just discovered the magazine is run out of a building 1 block from where I...

Scott McCloud - TED Talk on Comics Another great TED video I saw recently. I was particularly intrigued by the idea that, like any other art, comics can be broken down into classicist, animist, formalist, iconoclast groupings. Pretty basic..but I hadn’t thought of it before.

Jennifer 8. Lee - TED Talk on American Chinese Food. I’m a little turned off by some of her mannerisms and quips, but the lecture presents some interesting information on the origins of Chinese Food as it exists in America today.

Like my aunt’s vague e-mails the food poisoning stomach flu trudges on. No throwing up at this point, but my meal options are definitely limited. Also, there’s a Civil War going on in my tummy. Worse yet, now Matt has this thing also and won’t be able to see his out of town friend due to the contagion. Or get that extra day of vacation he was so close to getting. -sad face-...

E-mails from my aunt continue. Or should I say “aunt,” as I’ve never met or heard of this woman until my dad passed on my e-mail address to her a few days ago. Her opening message was “Hello! How are you? This is your father cousin ——, ——‘s mother. Please send me your phone number and I will call you later. Thanks” What??? —- ...

A Ukrainian aunt wants me to help her cheat on an English language assignment. Seriously. So weird. Even if I wanted to, I doubt I could pretend I know English just well enough to get 80% (she’s been getting C’s) on a basic 2nd year ESOL assignment. I offered to help fix whatever she wrote and directed her to the very helpful Google Translator (the best online translating tool...

For Uninsured Young Adults, Do-It-Yourself Health... →
This year’s THE YOUNG PEOPLE DON’T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE article. The New Yorker, NY Times and New York Magazine trade off every year on who gets to do this piece. Nothing terribly new, though as a recent Medicaid applicant I found this interesting: To qualify for Medicaid, a single adult can earn no more than $706 a month — less than what a full-time minimum-wage earner makes. Yet...

Mail:
Received an e-mail from elies. today: Almost everything what you’ve said here, you take your conclusions way too fast. I know a lot of “famous” teenager photographers who save every penny for their camera. RESPONSE: Hello, Thank you for the comment..as brief as it was. The expense of the camera wasn’t the focus of my post.. I was primarily interested in the similar...

Food poisoning. After a great weekend of home-cooked meals, a play, and general frolicking, I eat 2 tacos late last night, and I’m puking all morning. Suck.

Went to the gym for the first time since.. those yoga classes my sophomore year of college, and actually enjoyed it. Going to try to keep going regularly from now on. I am a weakling.

Without fully thinking it through, I have recently contacted the three key ex-boyfriends from the time I was 16-21. Andrew - My first real boyfriend from high school who was also my first kiss and terrible fight with my parents. We last saw each other about 6-7 years ago and recently reconnected via Facebook and IM. How strange it is to talk to an adult version of a person you primarily remember...

What I'm doing for V Day:
Going to see an Off-Broadway play called The Castle: “A 70 minute ‘drama verite’ in which 4 ex-convicts with a total of over 70 years in New York State prisons recount their stories of privation, crime, imprisonment and redemption.” Considering I’ve been obsessively watching OZ for the past few weeks, that kind of makes sense.
